In 1989, Barry and Jerry opened B.J. Pumpernickel's. Barry credits his success to a love of good people & his wife who has supported him throughout his career. In 2002, Barry opened opened two catering houses: Catered Celebrations by Barry and Schwartz Kosher Caterers.

Jerry Gurewitz grew up in the restaurant business, with his first job at Flower Deli in Takoma Park. Soon he began working with his dad at Queenstown delicatessen where he learned how to buy good deli, how to cook it, and how to satisfy customers. In 1969, Jerry and his brother Stuart took over Queenstown. After Jerry sold Queenstown Delicatessen, he joined his brother Stuart at Parkway Deli until 1989 when Jerry and Barry opened B.J.Pumpernickels. Jerry credits his success to his father, to getting up early every morning before the rooster crows, & his desire to help others in the restaurant business. Jerry retired to Florida in 2002.
